China is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries. In our country, seismic activities are charactered by a wide distribution range, low quake source and high intensity. The analysis of multiple earthquake damage shows that the situation of great loss is more serious in rural areas. This is related to the economic conditions, no formal aseismic designs and construction, structure types in the rural areas. So as their seismic capacity can’t meet requirements of earthquake fortification, seismic reinforcements are needed to improve the current situation of residential buildings.Timber structure houses are the most widely used form of rural houses. Among them, there exist a large number of wood buildings whose seismic capacity is poor. So study on reinforcement of timber structures is an urgent task to improve seismic capacity of buildings in villages and towns. Based on the studies at home and abroad, with the investigation of buildings in rural areas, analysis of earthquake ground, related article, books, the paper made research on the reinforcement and reconstruction of traditional vernacular dwellings. The paper includes the following contents:1. With investigation and research on related data, the paper makes a summary of the development of wood structure and its advantages and disadvantages.2. Characteristics of residential buildings and common earthquake damages in Yunnan are summarized. The paper finds some questions and weakness spots the buildings by the analysis of causes of damages.3. By using reference resources and relevant code, paper made a Comprehensive and complete summary of reinforcement and reconstruction measures for timber structure building.4. Based on reinforcement and reconstruction measures for timber structure building, the paper makes an seismic strengthening experiments by using iron hook, wood,steel plate to strengthen joints. Based on the experiments, this paper analyses the performance of the 15 mortise-tenon joints model. Then the failure mode, hysteresis characteristics, skeleton curves are obtained. At last, this paper gives suggestions for the choose of strengthening materials and installation processes.
