In this paper, a kind of steel ball automatic sorting system based on machine vision was designed. The surface characteristics of the steel ball are the research object. As to detect the defects of the steel ball quickly and sort the steel balls accurately. In the systematic research based on the traditional edge detection algorithm, proposes an adaptive multi-directions gray-scale morphology edge detection algorithm. The advantage of the improved edge detection algorithm and the accuracy of the steel ball sorting system was verified by experiment. The main research context as follows:(1) Hardware structure and software structure of the steel ball sorting system. The software structure of steel ball surface automatic detection system was designed by Halcon and VS2008 hybrid programming. The hardware structure was selected by the designing of CCD camera and lighting system.(2) The preprocessing of the steel ball surface image. The steel ball surface image acquired from CCD camera was progressed by image segmentation, smooth denoising and image binarization, so acquire the real information of the steel ball surface image.(3) The multi-directions gray-scale morphology edge detection algorithm and its advantages. In the research and analysis based on the traditional edge detection algorithm, proposes an adaptive multi-directions gray-scale morphology edge detection algorithm. And gray image and the steel ball surface as the object, edge detection experiment was conducted by improved edge detection algorithm. The results show that improved algorithm can more quickly and efficiently extract the gray image and the image information edge of the steel ball surface.(4) The feasibility validation of the steel ball sorting system. The steel ball in different diameter is sorted by the steel ball sorting system. The experimental results show that the work efficiency and the sorting accuracy of the system all can reach the actual production needs, the feasible of steel ball sorting system designed in this paper is testified.
