Power quality, system reliability, economy is the basic requirements in power system development. Penetrated by new energy, structure of the distribution network is increasingly complicated, thus increases the rate of the fault and the difficulty of fault accurate positioning, and puts forward new challenge to the system reliability.In China, distribution network is mainly in small current neutral grounding system. When a single-phase fault happens, due to the complex structure of the distribution network, ground current is small, making it difficult to locate the fault. This paper studies the distribution network fault pinpoint technology, using traveling wave to Measure the distance. The paper analyzes the propagation characteristics of traveling wave, traveling wave noise suppression technique and proposed use HHT transform to location the fault. We have also developed a fault data acquisition hardware design.In this paper, the traveling wave propagation is analyzed, taking into account the characteristics of the distribution network lines, it focuses on a number of refraction and reflection process traveling wave. Paper simulation shows the traveling wave in the distribution network is feasible.This paper focuses on the distribution network fault location technologies, including traveling wave de-noising technology and the first wave identification technology. In this paper, the morphological filtering method is use for signal acquisition filtering. Then the signal is decomposed into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMF). With Hilbert transform, the highest- frequency component of IMF signal can show its instantaneous frequency. Finally, we can find the mutation of the signal,which is the arrival time of the first wave.It also developed a fault data acquisition device, designed its hardware configuration, including a trigger boards, high-speed data acquisition and communications sector plate.Finally, ATP and MATLAB are used to stimulate synthetically, verifying the correctness of the algorithm. The results shows that the algorithm is unaffected with fault type, fault resistance, and multi-branch circuit size.
