In the water transfer project with ice and water two-phase flow, water flow rate has a great influence on the movement of floating ice. The floating ices are affected by the forces in the vertical and horizontal direction during the process of ice floating on the water. The flipping and driving of floating ice is related to the pressure due to the leading edge effect and the Venturi effect related with the ice size and the relative flow rate between the water and the ice. The relative flow rate is determined by the forces in the horizontal direction, including water drag force and wind stress. In this paper, the forces of floating ice were numerical simulated with Fluent software. When the flow rate is relatively small, the ice thickness and the width have small effect on the Leading Edge Effect and The Venturi Effect; when the flow rate is relatively large, the leading edge effect and the Venturi effect are gradually increased with the ice thickness, and the width of the floating ice has little influence on the leading edge effect and the Venturi effect. And if the floating ice size is invariant, the leading edge effect and the Venturi effect are increased with the relative flow rate. The critical flipping relative flow rate of the floating ice is calculated after the forces on the ice is analyzed, and the critical flow rate is related with the ice thickness.Water drag force is proportional to the square of the relative flow rate. The water drag force coefficient is related to the size and shape of floating ice, the relative flow rate, the kinematic viscosity of water, the location of the ice in the open channel, and the floating ice density etc.. And the water drag force coefficient was dimensional analyzed in this paper, which is the function of the ratio of length to thickness of the floating ice for the floating ice in a certain size. The velocity of the floating ice determined by the forces of water and air is estimated, and the relationship between the ice velocity and water velocity is also analyzed.
