With the development of science and technology, the technology of traditional machinery industry tends to be more and more high-grade, precise and advanced. Gears as the core parts of the machinery industry are also developed at high speed and extraordinary precision. With regard to the dynamic problems of precision gears, surface morphology of gears also has an important influence on its dynamics in addition to some of the common factors like varying stiffness, transmission error, backlash, etc. Thus research of dynamic parameters and dynamic characteristics of gears influenced by its surface morphology is very significant, which also helps to improve the level of accuracy and processing method for precision gears.This paper relies on the National Natural Science Fund Project "Research on the dynamic behavior of gears influenced by its surface morphology considering friction and lubrication ", where some issues like kinetic parameters (the contact stiffness and the contact damping) and the dynamic characteristics of the gears are discussed especially. In this paper, the contact model of cylinders which acts the simplified model for gears is chosen as the research object, and on the basis of M-B fractal contact model of contact surfaces between two cylinders, the fractal contact stiffness model and fractal contacts damping model was deduced combined with the calculation formula of contact stiffness and contact damping. Through the simulations in MATLAB, the influence rules of contact stiffness and contact damping influenced by fractal parameters of surface morphology are analyzed. And then the dynamic characteristics problems of the gears are studied further, the nonlinear dynamic model of gears are established after investigating stiffness excitation, transmission error excitation and fractal gears backlash. The numerical simulation in MATLAB is also implemented to analyze the relationship between fractal parameters of surface morphology and gear dynamic performance.The surface morphology of gears and fractal theory is introduced into the study of gears dynamics in this paper, aiming at acquiring the result that how the surface morphology influenced the kinetic parameters and dynamic characteristics of gears, which opens up a new research areas on dynamics of gears. The research in this paper can help to complement the theory system of gear dynamics and also provides a reference and theoretical basis for the further study of dynamics of the gear products.
