China owns numerous mountainous freeway, especially in central and western China, which brought improvement for people’s living standards and district’s economic development. At the same time, accompanied traffic accidents occurred frequently, in which roadside accidents has became a typical crash formation and always resulted in serious consequences. Therefore, commencing with a deep research into roadside safety issues on mountainous freeway and improving current roadside safety status in China is urgentThis paper collects traffic accident data in Taigan and Changjin Freeway of Jiangxi Province and Hanning Freeway of Shaanxi Province from 2009 to 2011, regarding roadside accident as a thematic, and commence to data mining and analysis. We made a comprehensive analysis on roadside accident features from driver, vehicle, highway alignment and environment four aspect. By using binary logit model, we examined accident data through regression analysis test, identified 10 risky factors having a significant impact on roadside accident occurrence, and ordered its impact.Considering the defect in current roadside safety assessment, this paper adopts “risk assessment”method to make a comprehensive assessment by considering accident frequency and objective risk level to fully show the safety level of roadside. For the former, based on accident data, using BP neural network to built the relationship between influencing factors with accident frequency, which can be used to make accident prediction in new-built freeway. For the latter, dividing roadside risk level into 4 grades, classifying risk level for every index and giving the scoring norms, the weight determination method combined rough set theory with AHP method was adopted, which achieves quantitative evaluation for roadside objective safety status. Through introducing “risk coordinate”, comprehensively know about the roadside safety level and make a comprehensive assessment, which provide guides for roadside safety improvement.Considering the frequent occurrence and serious consequence of roadside accidents, based on mountainous freeway’s own characteristic, proposed the active safety improvement measures for reducing the roadside accident occurrence and the passive safety improvement measures aiming at reducing accident damage. And make a case analysis.The research results of this paper has a certain reference function for enriching the roadside safety design theory and guiding the roadside safety improvement.
