Locomotive wheel tread fault is an important factor of affecting the train traffic safety, the wheel tread detected will reduce the occurrence of safety accidents to a certain extent. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to develop a kind of fault detection system.After the summary of domestic and foreign fault detection technology advantages and disadvantages and contacting with the actual situation in our country, the article is chosen the tread surface fault detection technology as the direction of research, which is based on the vibration law. The main work is as follows.Firstly, researches on main types and causes of the failure of the tread surface are done. And the principle of the fault detection is introduced.Secondly, the formation mechanism of vibration and shock is investigated. The simple vibration model is established to analyze abrasion fault as an example about the relationship between vibration and speed under different speeds. According to the relationship between impact energy, the mathematical relationship between the scratch depth and travel speed is established, and the rules depending on the depth of scratching to judge tread fault level are concluded.Thirdly, according to the requirement of vibration measurement principle and detection system, it is determined of its installed location and installation principle for the models of the hardware. According to the design requirements of each sensor,it needs to complete the measurement of signal and define the function performed by the hardware.Fourthly, in the aspect of detection algorithm, the system uses the theory of Hilbert-Huang transform to analysis the feature of vibration signal, the feature extraction algorithm of the judgment for tread fault is based on time-frequency entropy, and combining variance threshold, kurtosis factor threshold method is to improve the detection accuracy. With distance compensation and frequency compensation way, it is to improve the detection accuracy.Finally, the detection system of surface fault for locomotive wheel is based of the software platform of the LabVIEW.The platform is needed to complete the test of hardware system and detection algorithm. And this system needs to be verified. We need research and analyze the results of the experiment, and inspect the effectiveness of the system..
