In order to meet the needs of engineering applications of laser ignition system, in this paper, a laser ignition system has been designed. Initially, component parts were analysised and selected. Secondly, energy transmission characteristics and matching relationship between components were studied. Thirdly, breakthrough of sealing technology of the window has been reserched. Finally a laser ignition system prototype was successfully developed. Ignition experiments results proved that it can meet the requirements of engineering applications. The specific details are shown as follows:(1) Arm system:FC/PC connectors or SMA905 connectors are suitable for laser ignition system. The type of fiber optic connector should be the same, compared to SMA905 adapter, the coupling efficiency of FC/PC adapter was higher and more stable. Hollow fiber has a higher damage threshold, a better transmission stability, but its transmission efficiency is about 15% lower than the silica fiber. Its engineering potential still needs to be further developed.(2) Optical safety and arm device:Mechanical optical switch can be designed to set as an optical safety and arm device. It was found that The coupling efficiency of the optic switch is 79.27%, which can withstand 3W continuous laser and is suitable for the security device.(3) Built-in-test system:In the dual-wavelength and dual-fiber system is more convenient and feasible. PIN photodiode should be selected as a photo detector. Based on the system reliability analytical methods and principles of energy transmission, self-qualified criterion is found as 1.5L808nm< anbd.(4) Ignition device:Grin lens and B/KNO3 are suitable for the Pyrotechnics device. Optical window sealing can use 97In/3Ag solder or optical sealant, reflection film coating can improve the reception rate of the detection light.(5) A laser ignition system prototype was successfully developed, experiments were set up to verify the key technologies and the feasibility of engineering applications of the laser ignition system. It was found that the laser ignition system prototype could satisfy the requirement of the optical safety and self-test. The experiments results prove that the ignition system has a high security and reliability, which can meet the requirements of engineering applications.
