Sylepta derogate Fabricius, one of polyphagous insect pests widely distributes in China. In recent years? S. derogate has done increasingly serious harm in some of the cotton-growing areas and become one of dorminant leaf-eating pests in Yangtze river region with the wide planting of transgenic cotton. And Abutilon theophrasti Medic is the main imtermediate host of S. derogate. In this paper, host preference of S. derogate female for egg laying was studied using conventional cotton Simian3and A. theophrasti to explorer the function of chemical signals during host selection of S. derogate adult. And influence of these two host plants on S. derogate population growth. The main research results are follows:Effects of host (Simian3and A. theophrasti) on population growth of S. derogate were studied. Results showed that S. derogate larvae developed1-2d faster in A. theophrasti than on Simian3. And the survival rate reached51.87-56.43%higher than that on Simian3(41.29-44.34%). The index of population increase of S. derogate fed with A. theophrasti for three successive were41.23、38.49and34.22, significantly higher than those of S. derogate fed with cotton, which were25.32、23.70and22.37respectively. In short, A. theophrasti had higher fitness to S. derogate, which is more beneficial its population increase. The results of cage oviposition test results showed that a S. derogate female eggs laid6.78±0.58eggs on Simian3, which was significantly less than egg laid on A. theophrasti (11.53±0.69).Y type olfactometer test also showed that the A. theophrasti strongly attracted S. derogate.Volatile organic compounds collected in Simian3at the budding stage A. theophrasti at blossom stage were analysed and identified using the gas chromatography—mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Twenty-four kinds of chemical components were found from Simian3plant volatiles, and23kinds from A. theolphrasti S. derogate female had obvious electrophysiological responses to2-ethyl acetophenone and3-ethyl heptane among5tested substances such as2-ethyl acetophenone、3-ethyl heptane、Decane、cyanoacetic acid and2-methyl piperazine using EAG technology.Experimental results show that the attractive effects of A.theophrasti on S. derogate, this provides a new idea for the integrated control of S. derogate, as well as for the development of attractants S. derogate laid the theoreticalarge.
