Mutants are important resources for functional genomics. Since the full genome of foxtail millet was sequenced and there is an urgent need for mutant populations for gene function study, this study applied fast neutron treatment on foxtail millet variety Yugul at four doses:4Gy,8Gy,16Gy and32Gy, single panicles were harvested, a total of6000、7000、6000and5000lines were obtained for each dose, respectively, establishing the basic resources of the mutant library. M2generation was grown for each dose and the corresponding populations were screened for visible phenotype from seedlings to mature stage. Mutants showing albino, yellow leaves, changed spikelets, higher and dwarf and so on. These mutants were harvested by single panicles for further genetic and molecular analysis. Based on the fact that dwarf mutants were identified in this study and the importance of dwarf resources in the production and breeding of foxtail millet, this thesis analysed the four homologue genes in foxtail millet to the rice dwarf gene SD1, by investigating their gene structures and cis elements in their promoter region (3000bp upstream of transcription start site). It was found that there were strong difference in the number and types of cis elements among the promoter regions of the four genes, indicating potentially different expression levels and patterns of these four genes. The phylogenetic relationship of these four SD1homologues among graminaceous was analysed and phylogenetic tree constructed.The construction of fast neutron mutant library would promote the research on functional genomics of foxtail millet and lay the foundation for exploring and utilizing the genetic resources of the crop.
