The fire risk can be avoided if wood has been treated with flame retardant. Basswood is widely used as furniture and decoration materials in north China because of its good decoration and machining performance. So basswood needs retardant process to develop its use. BL-environmentally friendly flame retardant was selected as the research material, and air dry basswood was fixed on the vertical vacuum apparatus. To investigate the influence of five vertical vacuum retardant process parameters on basswood flame retardant loading and oxygen index, five single factor experiments were done. On the base of single factor experiments, an orthogonal experiment was made to optimize process parameters. Then three kinds of flame retardant treatments were carried out to compare with vertical vacuum retardant process, while retardant loadings, discoloration and the capacity of retardant material was measured as performance indexes. The results is as follows:(1)Chosen retardant loading and oxygen index as performance indexes, the retardant loading and oxygen index increased gradually with the prolonging of process time, the tendency of increase and then decrease with the increase of vacuum time and the rising retardant concentration. But the oxygen index didn’t increase along with the adding of loading in the case of retardant temperature rising.(2)The treated wood could reach loading of 106.84 kg/m3 and oxygen index of 56.0% under the optimum process conditions, namely vacuum time of 40min, process time of 30min, retardant concentration of 40%, vacuum degree of -0.09MPa and temperature of 20℃. The thickness of 20mm treated basswood after planed surface could reach the judgement index of flame retardant grade Ⅱ GB 20286-2006 (component/other furniture), while the thickness of 30mm treated basswood without planed surface didn’t reach the judgement index.(3)Basswood treated by the vertical vacuum retardant process can not only got good retardant performance, but also has advantages of minimum material amount, maximum use ratio, least cost and residue recycle. It shows that the vertical vacuum retardant process can be a new process treated on basswood.
