The world’s forests hold importance for all of their inhabitants as well as for the overall health of the planet. Once the forest ecosystem is destroyed, the damage is everlasting. Therefore, the protection of the existing forest resources is of extreme importance for sustainable human development. Forest fire does the most severe harm to forest resources. A large forest fires could burn an entire region to ashes, causing huge environmental and economic damage. Forest fire prevention technology is gaining its attention from many countries. Many efforts are put in enforcing fire precautions in order to protect forest resources. Currently, commonly used methods of fire precaution include forest fire prediction, infrared sensors monitor, laser monitoring, radar surveillance, aerial satellite monitor, airplane cruising artificial rainfall, etc. The adoption of a variety of fire precaution technologies effectively reduced the occurrence of forest fires.Among the above mentioned forest fire preventions, air patrol is the most rapid and effective way. High operating costs of aircraft, however, is the reason that limit its popularity. In this research, we design a small Quadrocopter with same functionality of patrolling forest. Quadrocopter has the advantage of low cost, easy control and maintenance. For small forest, Quadrocopter enables the benefits of air patrol without the burden of heavy cost.Quadrocopter can transmit images back through wireless networks while patrolling the forest. It could replace human patrol, greatly reducing the cost of human labor and other resources. Firstly, this paper analyzes the demands for a forest fire system, accordingly to which we introduce the framework, workflow and implementation of the forest fire system.Next, we introduce the implementation of the fire precaution system in three sub-systems. The first part is the detailed production process of Quadrocopter, introducing the basic UAV, in which various parts of the device works, as well as the software design and implementation of UAV. The second part describes the network transmission module. Network transmission module has a role in the interaction of information in the system. It uses 3C2440 as the control core, running an embedded LINUX system to drive the camera and a 3G network card to interact with the backend server. The last part presents the analysis forest image. The main objective of this part is to identify the image received in the backend server. Smoke recognition algorithm based on grayscale image is introduced, followed by experimental verification of the reliability of the algorithm. The novelty of this paper lies in the combination of Quadrocopter and wireless network transmission technology for fire precaution task in small forest. The usage of smoke recognition algorithm greatly improved the reliability of the system. Currently the Quadrocopter we designed is able to meet the basic functional requirements, and we believe that with further development it will play an important role for forest fire preventions in the future.
