In this paper,the Picea crassifolia forest, Pinus tabuliformis forest, Ulmus glaucescens forest and P. davidiana forest of the main representative forest communities in Helan mountain were used as research object.Using the method of average biomass of wood sampling, the biomass and carbon storage of the four main types of forest communities were studied.The paper discussed the difference of carbon content rate of organ in different trees and shrub,and the difference of biomass and carbon storage of different layers, and the constitution and distribution characteristics of total biomass and carbon storage.In order to provide data support to evaluate carbon storage capacity and ecological service function of the forest vegetation in Ningxia Helan Mountain. The main results and conclusions are as follows:1. The total biomass of the Picea crassifolia forest, Pinus tabuliformis forest, Ulmus glaucescens forest and P. davidiana forest were 239.47 t·hm-2,209.58 t·hm-2,25.74 t·hm-2 and 180.78 t·hm-2.2. From the point of view of the composition of the total biomass, we found that the main part of total biomass was tree layer,which accounted for the total biomass 79.91%,70.78%,74.51% and 89.41% respectively.The second was ground layer which accounted for the total biomass 19.40%, 23.80%,24.56% and 9.80% respectively,and the lowest was shrub layer, accounted for 1.41%,5.42%, 0.94% and 2.70% respectively.3. From the point of view of components of the forestand of four community, we found that stem wood,branches and roots were the main components of stand biomass,which account for the total biomass of the four forest were 85.82%,82.53,89.07% and 85.51% respectively. 4. The mean carbon content of the aboveground part of the four forest of Picea crassifolia, Pinus tabuliformis, Ulmus glaucescens and P. davidiana were 0.4576,0.5184,0.4390 å'Œ 0.4664 respectively, in which the mean carbon content of the two conifers was 0.49,while the two broadleaf was 0.4527,the conifers was higher than the broadleaf 8.24%. The mean carbon content of the aboveground of main shrub was between 0.4373-0.5105, the overall average value was 0.4694. 5.The total carbon storage of the Picea crassifolia forest, Pinus tabuliformis forest, Ulmus glaucescens forest and P. davidiana forest were 277.82 t·hm-2,199.28 t·hm-2,62.48 t·hm-2 and 251.51 t·hm-2 respectively. And the carbon storage of tree layer were 86.02 t·hm-2,75.88 t·hm-2,8.92 t·hm-2 and 66.29 t·hm-2 respectively,the shrub layer were 1.49 t·hm-2,5.09 t·hm-2,0.12 t·hm-2 and 2.17 t·hm-2 respectively, the ground layer were:13.60 t·hm-2,20.64 t·hm-2,2.92 t·hm-2 and 7.56 t·hm-2 respectively, the soil layer were 176.71 t·hm-2,97.67 t·hm-2,50.53 t·hm-2 and 175.49 t·hm-2. The overall performance of the carbon storage in the spatial distribution was soil layer> tree layer> ground layer> shrub layer. 6. From the point of view of distribution characteristics of carbon storage on tree layer, we found that the stem wood,branch and root were the main part of the total carbon storage, with account for the carbon storage of tree layer was 86%,81.9%,89.1% and 88.7% respectively.7. From the point of view of the distribution characteristics of the carbon storage of aboveground and underground,we found that the aboveground and underground part carbon storage of four communities were 101.11 t·hm-2 and 176.71 t·hm-2,101.60 t·hm-2 and 97.67 t·hm-2,11.96 t·hm-2 and 50.53 t·hm-2,76.02 t·hm-2 and 175.49 t·hm-2 respectively. And the underground carbon storage was the aboveground carbon storage 1.75 times,0.96 times,4.23 times and 2.31 times,with the average was 2.31 times.
