Rice water weevil (lissorhoptrus oryzophilus) is an international quarantine object, which was initially found in the eastern US and invaded to China in 1988. The insect entered Hunan province in 2001 and was first discovered in Loudi City in May 2005. In this study, rice water weevils in Shuangfeng County, Loudi City, Hunan Province were used to explore the morphological features and occurrence regularity of the pest. The possible causes of the rapid spread of rice water weevil were analyzed by collecting the data when and where it first appeared in different provinces of China. A series of field trials were conducted to determine the best period to control rice water weevil and mode of pesticide application in Loudi City of Hunan Province. The effects of pesticides between the traditional one such as triazophos and the novel one such as chlorantraniliprole on the control of rice water weevil were also compared. Strategies of wiping out the wintering adult insects, strengthening quarantine, investigating at regular intervals, and integrated management were raised to release the epidemic situation caused by rice water weevil.
