Plinthitic red earth is a kind of sediment with special structure,which made up of different proportions of red, white, yellow stripes.Supervised classification method can extract colors in different sections, and calculate the proportion of their respective, and establish a relationship with the chromaticity values.The combination analyze the different pattern of the plinthitic red earth, and try to explain the cause of the plinthitic red earth. Main conclusions are as follows(1) In the same section as a whole, the proportion of red is higher than yellow, but the proportion of yellow and white isn’t very obvious. And the same section of different layers, the proportion of color is different.In the shallow section, yellow, red have inverse proportion,and white is the same.And the correlation between white and yellow is not obvious; In the deep section,yellow, red and white have the same proportion relations as the shallow layer. The type of iron oxide caused the different color of the soil. When the water content of water of the red earth grow, hematite will translate into goethite. This conversion weaken the degree of red and enhance yellow at the same time. So, the inverse proportion between red and yellow stripes are able to instruct the content of the water.(2) The difference between red and white striopes can characterize development trend of the variation of intensity, white proportion affect the soil the level directly,indicate the change of the formation of plinthitic red earth in section.In different section, the white checker in jiujiang, the largest proportion of 36.43%, checkered pattern is given priority to with vermicular, root shape. White chequered under-representation of profile, the checker is irregular flocculent scattered, and checkered floor area is small, poor development degree.(3) Impact phase of the plithintic red earth has obvious river dual sedimentary structure, and the development on the bedrock of the red earth and rock has a good relationship with the gradient. Section at the bottom of the form are similiar with underlying strata in development direction.It usually reveals that the plinthitic red earth associated with the earth’s surface and underground river.
