Artificial fencing methods used to combat land degradation have unknown influences on vegetation restoration in the North West of China, especially at Yanchi Ningxia Hui Autonomous region. To determine it efficiencydata have been collected (from 2003 to 2014) using quadrate and transect line methods based on plant community structure characteristics indices (Shannon wiener diversity index, Simpson dominance index and the evenness index) and the biomass, height and weight have been measured. The results showed that under the condition of enclosure the diversity index of vegetation were relatively high in the year-round enclosure grassland and seasonal enclosure’s grassland. The diversity indexes in the no enclosure grassland were relatively low due to some degree of disturbance.Due to the long-term enclosure, vegetation growth in year-round enclosure grassland is poor.To summarize, fencing project can effectively improve the natural restoration of degraded grassland vegetation in one hand and in other hand improve the grassland ecological environment, promote farmer’sincome by increasing animal graze land, and rural development. Therefore, the Chinese government should continue the implementation of returning farmland to forests or grasslands and grazing prohibition policy. It should pay attention to the enclosure time, biological crust problem, grassland resource utilization in the process of effective grassland management, which helps to optimize the ecological, economic and social benefits.
