Measurement of wood volume is always a key part in the forestry industry production. The manual measurement has been adopted for a long time. The manual measurement is greatly influenced by human factors, resulting in low measuring precision, low working efficiency, making the inspection work become the bottleneck of the production. In order to solve the problems above, this paper proposes the automatic detection of log volume using machine vision technology.This paper analyzes the development of automatic gauging of log and image processing, the existing methods are summarized and commented, explains the visual technology in wood processing application and development level.In this paper, according to the actual needs of measuring log volume, combined with the detection environment, hardware experimental platform was set up. The experimental platform gathering image and distance data, processing of wood, identifying in the image of wood, then calculate the true long and short diameters of wood, then get the result of the gauge diameter and log volume value according to the volume formula. The Result proved the feasibility of wood volume machine vision detection.This paper detailed argument the principle of image processing and data processing, proved the feasibility and rationality of the system design according to real situation.This paper designed portable detection equipment, system development based on the embedded system. Transplant the algorithm testing platform and acquisition conditions, the embedded system was stably operated in the field testing.This paper Set up the software development environment, compile the system software and designs the software of the log volume measuring system based on machine vision. And then discusses the realization of the function of user software according to each subsystem.The experimental results show that, in design of portable and automatical logs inspection equipment, the hardware was simple and configuration and the while software interface is easy to operated. This equipment can apply to a variety of on-site inspection and the measuring accuracy of the system has reached the requirement of design. From what has been discussed above, the system has a high Practicality and greatly worth introducing.
