Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effect ofsomatostatin on the liver function of patients undergoing hepatic ischemia reperfusioninjury after liver operation.Method Sixty patients were randomized into group A (n=30) and group B (n=30).Patients in group A received no somatostatin whereas somatostatin was administratedfor patients in group B perioperatively. Liver function were compared between thetwo groups. Results Compared to group A, alanine transaminase values in group B weresignificantly reduced at2hours after portal vein declamping, at the end of theoperation and postoperation day1(P <0.05), whereas aspartate aminotransferasevalues in group B decreased at20minutes after portal vein clamping, at2hours afterportal vein declamping and at the end of the operation (P <0.05). Total bilirubinvalues in group B were reduced significantly at2hours after portal vein declampingand at the end of the operation when compared to group A (P <0.05).Conclusion Somatostatin had a protective effect on liver function during the earlyphase after operation for hepatic ischemia reperfusion injury.
