Objective:Epilepsy is a disorder primarily of the cerebral cortex, with seizures occurring when populations of neurons discharge in abnormal patterns, trepeatedly attacks, affects the life quality of patients seriously. The pathophysiology of epileptic disorders is complicated. Endocrine system changes in epilepsy patients found in many researches, gherlin may be involved in epilepsy. Ghrelin is a28-amino acid motilin-related and orexigenic peptide and mainly produced by the X/A-like cells of the oxyntic stomach mucosa and centrally by the neurons in the hypothalamus. The objective to study the levels of ghrelin in serum of epileptic patients to know the function of ghrelin in epilepsy. Establish more simple and sensitivity methods to diagnosis、treat and evaluate epilepsy.Find the accurate patology and new treatment for epilepsy.Methods.The study included a total of40epileptic patients who were divided into two groups:(1)18patients who were diagnosed with primary generalized seizures(female n=11and male=7), the age ranged from18to60, the duration from6months to30years,8patient were newly diagnosised without treatment,10patiets were continuing treated with Valproate more than3months;(2)22who had partial seizures (female:n=14and male:n=8), the age ranged from17to47, the duration from6months to30years,8patients were newly diagnosised without treatment,16patients were continuing treated with carbamazepine after3months;28BMI and age-matched healthy subjects served as controls (female n=16and male=12), the age ranged from25to43. Serum ghrelin levels were measured by Enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay (ELISA),and Fasting bloodglucose(FBG), Triglyceride(TG), Total TC cholesterol (TC), High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) are also tested. Weight and height were tested to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI).Clnical features were enrolled to the study, such as age、sex and BMI.Results:1.The serum ghrelin concentration of epileptic patients were44.35±11.07pg/ml, the serum ghrelin concentration of control group were75.37±8.52pg/ml.The serum ghrelin levels of the epileptic patients were significantly higher than controls (P<0.05)2.The serum ghrelin concentration of partial group were50.52±9.55pg/ml, the serum ghrelin concentration of generalized group were37.39±7.89pg/ml, the serum ghrelin levels of partial group were significance higher than generalized group(P<0.05).3.In generalized group, the patients treated with valproate had serum ghrelin levels (39.86±6.22pg/ml) significantly higher than ones who did not have been treated, but significantly lower than control group (P<0.05)。4. In partial group, the serum ghrelin concentration of patients treated with carbamazepine (55.45±5.21pg/ml) were significantly higher than those who without treatment (55.45±5.21pg/ml), but significantly lower than control group (P<0.05)Conclusion:1.The serum ghrelin levels of the epileptic patients were lower than the control group, the partial group had serum ghrelin levels higer than generalized group, It showed ghrelin may have important roles in epilepsy.2.The serum ghrelin levels were significantly higher in generalized patients taking valproate than in untreated generalized patients;the serum ghrelin concentration of partial group with carbamazepine treatment were significantly higher than those who without treatment.lt suggested high concentration had the effect to anti-epilepsy.
