ObjectiveIt is universally acknowledged that the combination of exercise and diet interventionis the most scientific and effective means to lose weight, which is good to reducingbody fat of obese adults obviously. But for obese adolescents who are not mature, ithas not been clear whether this intervention is also useful, as well as sex differencesand changes of body fat distribution. In this paper, we observed the changes in obeseadolescents’ body fat and sex differences by the combination of exercise and dietintervention for4weeks. Furthermore, we also discuss the effect of this combinationfor obese adolescents’ losing weight through the changes of serum lipoprotein lipaseactivity.MethodsThe data of301Chinese overweight or obese adolescents with a complete set ofanthropometric were collected,179males and122females, aged9to17, in ShanghaiDianfeng Weight Control Summer School from2009to2013(A group).32obeseadolescents from VIP class also are included as the object of study(B group). All ofthe subjects attended a4-week exercise and diet weight reduction program. Weight, height, body mass index, body fat rate, skinfold thickness(subscapular and triceps),wasit and hip circumferences, waist to hip ration, subscapular-to-tricepsskinfold-thickness ratio from the subjects of group A were measured, while weight, height, body mass index, body fat rate, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high densitylipoprotein, low density lipoprotein and lipoprotein lipase activity of group B weremeasured. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to determine the fat-free massaccording to anthropometric method. The human body morphology and bloodbiochemical indicators are detected one times at the beginning and end of experimentrespectively. The parents of group A, B subjects signed informed consent about losingweight and experiments. All the data was analyzed and processed by SPSS17.0, whichwere showed as mean±standard deviation (X±SD).Results1.Weight, BMI and fat-free mass of group A and group B declined significantly (P<0.05) in Chinese overweight or obesity adolescents following a4-week exercise anddiet weight reduction program, the males in group A showed more body weight and fat loss than the females(P<0.05);2. WHR, waist and hip circumferences also reduced significantly (P<0.05), thedecline in the percentage of waist circumferences is greater than that of hipcircumferences. But there were no differences between the males and femalesfollowing a4-week exercise and diet weight reduction program(P>0.05);3.Subscapular and triceps skinfold thickness of group A became thinner significantlyafter4weeks intervention(P<0.05), but STR didn’t change (P>0.05. Theskinfold-thickness of males reduced significantly (P<0.05) more than that of females, but there were no differences in subscapular(P>0.05).4. The levels of TG、TC and LDL from subjects of group B reduced significantly after4-week exercise and diet weight control program(P<0.01). The activity of LDLincreased distinctly (P<0.01), but there were no sex differences between males andfemales(P>0.05).Conclusion1.4-week exercise and diet weight reduction program can significantly reduce thedegree of obesity and enhance the body fat plumpness in obese adolescents, in whichthe effect of losing weight is better in males than females. It is suggested that we needconsider sex differences in this program.2. After4-week exercise and diet weight reduction program, abdominal fat andcircumference decreased significantly, the effect of decrease in waist and abdominalfat was better than in hip, and the decrease in upper arm fat of males was greater thanthat of females, suggesting that exercise combined with dietary intervention arescientific methods that can improve local changes in fat accumulation andcircumference.3.4-week exercise and diet weight reduction program can increase serum LPLactivity significantly in obese adolescents, which also contribute to enhance the abilityof fat oxidation in exercise.
