Background/Purpose The study was designed to investigate thefeasibility and efficacy of hepato-biliary-enteric stent drainage as a novelpalliative treatment for these proximal malignant obstructive jaundicepatients. Methods Between February2011to August2012,23patients with theproximal malignant obstructive jaundice of unresectable tumors atexploration received hepato-biliary-enteric stent drainage. Patient’s liverfunction results, symptoms, complications and survival time weredocumented. Results The bilirubin levels of all23patients had a considerable andpersistent decrease after operation and remained low or normal beforedeath except for4cases of recurrent jaundice(two resulted from migrationof tube and other two resulted from hepatocellular carcinoma extensivelyinvolving liver parenchyma). After effective drainage, clinical symptomsof cholangitis such as fever or pain were markedly relieved. Noprocedure-related bleeding, bile leakage, pancreatitis was observed. The median survival time was212days, half-year and1-year survival rate were56.5%and21.7%respectively.Conclusions Hepato-biliary-enteric stent drainage with less expense, less complications, effective drainage and easy operation may be an idealoption for patients with unresectable malignancy in the hilar region atexploration.
