Objectives To analyze the clinicopathological features of chondrosarcoma of the jaw(JCS) by retrospective review. Methods A total of40cases coded as JCS were reviewed from the files of theDepartment of Oral Pathology, Peking University Hospital and School of Stomatology, during the period from1990to2012. The patient details, clinical information, histology, and information on recurrence were analyzed. Distribution of chondrocytes wasinvestigated by Safranine-O strain. We also analyzed the histogenesis of JCS byimmunohistochemical labeling of S-100, CD99, NSE and Syn. The proliferative activityand collagen distributiong were evaluated by determining the expression of Ki67,CollagenⅡand Vimentin.Results1. The40patients with JCS aged from15to69years (average37.6years),occurred maily in the third decade (75%). The ratio of male patients (18) to femalepatients(22) was1:1.2. The mandible was affected in27(67.5%) cases and the maxilla in13(32.5%) lesions.2. The common presenting symptoms were jaw swelling, pain, numbness, etc. Of the33lesions with available radiographs,17cases(51.25%) were ill-defined,2(6%)were worm-eaten,5cases (15.15%) radiographic density increased,4cases (12.12%) lower density,7patients (21.21%) level of inequality,1case (3.03%) wasof root resorption,2cases (6%) sequestrum formation,10cases (30.30%) of bonedestruction,3cases (9.09%) mandibular pathological fracture.3. Surgical treatment wasperformed in37cases. Related follow-up data were available on36patients with respectto recurrence. The follow-up period ranged from15days to174months with an averageof29months.35patients were revealed recurrence, lung metastases was occured on4ofthem and one patient died from cancer.4. Histologically, based on the histologic gradingof JCS proposed by WHO in2005, of the18lesions with available specimens,4caseswere classified as gradeⅠand10cases as grade Ⅱ,4cases as grade Ⅲ. Safranine-Ostain showed red area was the distribution areas of cartilage cells.5. S-100was expressedin9cases (50%), CD99was expressed in13cases (72.22%), NSE was expressed in9cases (50%) and Syn was negative in all18cases (100%). Ki67LI (23.97±18.65%) inrecurrence cases was slightly lower than the cases without recurrence(P>0.05), while CollagenⅡ LI (50.04±25.56%) in recurrence cases was slightly higher than the caseswithout recurrence(P>0.05). VimentinLI (48.40±11.10%) in recurrence cases wassignificantly higher than that in the cases without recurrencewas (P<0.05).Conclusions JCS is a malignant bone tumor. The average age is37.6years, thirddecades is the first peak incidence. With a slightly predilection for women, JCS occursmore in the mandible jaw. X-rays are mostly ill-defined, uneven density of soft tissue. Ithas a high propensity to recur. JCS derived from mesenchymal tissue. Vimentinexpression can be used as an important prognostic indicator for JCS.
