Objective The objective of this article is to research and analysis chemical composition and biological activity of petroleum ether fractions and ethyl acetate fractions from Valeriana jatamansi Jones, which is a traditional Chinese medicine, and this will lay the foundation for the further development of Valeriana jatamansi Jones for medicine.Methods The methods of isolation and purification such as silicagel eolunun, RP-C18 and Sephadex LH-20 as well as recrystallization were used and the chemical structures based on physicochemical properties and spectral data were elucidated to isolate and identify the constituents of the Valeriana jatamansi Jones. MTT were used to tes the antineoplasmic activity of triterpenes components from Valeriana jatamansi Jones.Results and Discussion In the end, we have been isolated eleven compounds through a variety of natural medicine extraction methods, and through spectral analysis combined with the literature to determine the chemical structures of 11 compounds. They were identified as: 1,5-Dihydroxy-3,8-epoxyvalechlorine A(A), Baldrinal(C), Chlorovaltrate A (D), β-Sitosterol (E), Oleanic acid(F), Valeriananoid C(G), β-Daucosterol(H),4-Hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamaldehyde(J), 1-methoxy-7-hydroxy-8-methyl--3,8-epoxy-△4,11-dihyronepetane(K), Valtratum-isovaleroxyhydrin(L), Didrovaltratum-valeroxyhydrin(M), Among the total, three sterides including compound E, F and H, compound C is a degradation products; compound J is a cinnamaldehyde. and six iridoids including A, D, G, K, L and M.MTT assay to observing the different concentration of the six compounds (A, D, K, L, M and Valjatrate E) in vitro of inhibiting SW480, HepG2, and HeLa cells. Tests showed that six compounds can inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells, and in a certain concentration range showed a dose dependent. The inhibitory effect of compound L have certain significance for further research and development.
