BACKGROUND:Chylothorax is a rare disease due to ruptured of the thoracic duct or one of its major part that leads to accumulation of chyle in the pleural space. The study aims to evaluate the incidence rate, treatment, characteristic and risk factors of chylothorax events.METHODS:The study was conducted to patients who experienced chylothorax with retrospective method in ten year period at First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University. The analysis was performed in univariate analysis for frequency, characteristic and treatment. A bivariate analysis performed to evaluate the risk factors in chylothorax hospital length of stay.RESULTS:There are 39 chylothorax patients with mean age 28.6 Years old and 69.2% of the patients are male,53.8% of our subjects had pulmonary problems such as pneumothorax (5.1%), lung bullae (5.1%), pneumonia (25.6%), and pleural effusion (17.9%). The main etiology of chylothorax is surgical trauma (38.5%). From study hospital length of stay mean are 28.6 days. The analysis of risk factors associated hospital length of stay in chylothorax patients found that congenital and cardiac comorbidities are significant risk factors (p=0.05 and p=0.04) associated with hospital length of stay.CONCLUSION:Chylothorax is a rare disease that still considered as a significant problem associated with the hospital length of stay. Strategies and further detail diagnostics should be implemented since initial patient presence in the hospital.
