ObjectivesTo analysis the clinical characteristics, pathological classification, surgical and therapeutic effect in older adult population.MethodsA retrospective view of 151 cases of surgical treatment of orbital tumors in patients aged 60 years or older at Qi Lu Hospital from January,2004 to March,2014. Study the distribution of pathology and common tumors in different groups were determined. The clinical signs and iconographic characterizations of orbital tumors were summarized. Analysis the rate of exophthalmos、mass and orbital pain by benign and malignant group. Summarize the imaging features about orbital tumor and discuss how to select the appropriate surgical approach.ResultsClinical features included proptosis, eye movements restricted, decreased vision and so on. Imaging tests can help to diagnose the location and size of the tumor, and select the surgical methods. Anterior orbitotomy 97 cases, lateral orbitotomy 39 cases, medial orbitotomy 10 cases, exenteration 5 cases. The orbital tumor was benign in 103 patients(68.21%) and malignant in 48(31.79%). Among 103 benign cases, the top three were cavernous hemangioma, lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenomas, idiopathic orbital inflammation. Among 48 malignant cases, the top three were malignant lymphoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, pleomorphic adenocarcinoma.ConclusionsElderly should do radiological examination once they appear proptosis. Orbital surgery is the preferred way of treatment, we select the surgical methods based on the location and size of tumor and tolerance of patients. Malignant lymphoma is the most common malignant orbital tumor in the elderly.
