Research Background With the changing of the modern health concept, continuous improvement of the new medical model, and the extension of nurses’ role, the communication between nurses and patients is more and more important. In clinical nursing work, the application of communication skills can improve nursing quality, relieve patients’ anxiety, tension and other negative emotions, and help patients develop the confidence to overcome the disease. Therapeutic communication has certain effects in improving patient mental health, and the clinical nurses pay more and more attention on it.Research Objective The purposes of this paper were to research the influence of therapeutic communication mode on the anxiety, coping style and the hope level for preoperative esophageal cancer patients, and to provide support and basis for promoting the rehabilitation of patients with esophageal cancer after surgery.Materials and Methods 231 preoperative esophageal cancer patients associated with anxiety from a department of Thoracic Surgery in a 3 Grade-Ⅲ Level-A hospitals in Shandong Province were randomly selected as subjects during September 2013 to August 2014. They were randomly divided into control group and intervention group. The former included 116 cases, and the latter included 115 cases. They were asked to finish the questionnaires on the first day when they were admitted into the hospital to measure the psychological state, coping styles and the hope level. The questionnaires included four parts:the general information questionnaire, Self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), Trait coping style questionnaire (TCSQ) and Herth hope index scale (HHI). Intervention group received routine care, clinical general communication, and therapeutic communication. Control group received usual care and clinical routine communication. They were asked to finish the same questionnaires on the day before surgery to assess patients’ anxiety status, coping styles and the hope levels. We used SPSS16.0 statistical software for statistical analysis, including descriptive analysis,x2 test, t test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test.Main Results A total of 250 patients were investigated and 240 (96%) questionnaires have been got. And the effective questionnaires were 231(96.3%). Detailed information was as follows:Between the intervention group and the control group, there was no significant difference in gender, age, marital status, education level, family income and other basic information. Comparison of anxiety, coping style and hope index scores of the control group and the intervention group before the intervention, the scores showed no significant difference (P>0.05). Comparison of anxiety, coping style and hope index scores of the intervention group and the control group after the intervention, the scores showed significant difference (P<0.05). Comparison of anxiety, coping style, hoping index score in intervention group before and after the intervention, the difference was statistically significance (P<0.01).It released the anxiety, promoted their positive coping style and increased hope levels. Comparison of anxiety, coping style, hoping index score in control group before and after the intervention, the difference was not statistically significance (P>0.05).Conclusion and SuggestionTherapeutic communication mode could improve preoperative esophageal cancer patients’anxiety, and optimize the patient’s coping style, improve patients’ hope level, and make patients establish the confidence to overcome the disease. Therapeutic communication is a nurse-patient communication-oriented approach. It could help patients effectively deal with bad anxiety and other negative emotions, and improve the coping ability and hope level, with the use of relevant expertise psychology, ethics, interpersonal communication, etc. and a range of care measures. It could make patients in the best state of mind to accept treatment, care, and promote successful rehabilitation. Therapeutic communication as a nurse-patient communication is a worthy to promote. In the process of practical nursing, we should strengthen the study and application of therapeutic communication mode, and masterly grasp the application methods and skills of therapeutic communication mode.
