ObjectiveTo investigate the expression of FOXC1, MMP-2and MMP-9proteins in esophagealsquamous cell carcinoma and explore the correlation between FOXC1and MMP-2,MMP-9.MethodsImmunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of FOXC1, MMP-2andMMP-9proteins in94esophageal squamous cell carcinoma specimens and47esophagealsquamous cell carcinoma-adjacent normal tissues. The relationships of FOXC1, MMP-2and MMP-9were analyzed, and the relationships of FOXC1, MMP-2and MMP-9withclinicopathological features of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were then analyzed.SPSS18.0statistical software was used for statistical analysis, There was a significantdifference, when P <0.05.Results1. The expression of FOXC1of the esophageal squamous cell carcinomaThe expression of FOXC1in the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was mainlylocated in cytoplasm of cells, a few in the nuclei. The expressions of FOXC1in esophagealsquamous cell carcinoma were higher than that of esophageal squamous cellcarcinoma-adjacent normal tissues [81.9%(77/94) vs25.5%(12/47), P<0.05]. FOXC1expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma with low differentiation (96.7%),T3-4stage (90.3%) and lymph node metastasis group (95.0%) were much higher than thatwith middle-high differentiation (75.0%), T1-2stage (71.4%), and negative lymph nodemetastasis (72.2%), P values were0.011,0.018and0.005, respectively. There was norelationship with age and gender.2. The expression of MMP-2in esophageal squamous cell carcinomaThe expressions of MMP-2in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were located in cytomembrane and cytoplasm of cells. The expressions of MMP-2in esophageal squamouscell carcinoma were higher than that of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma-adjacentnormal tissues [77.7%(73/94) vs17.0%(8/47), P<0.05]. MMP-2expression in esophagealsquamous cell carcinoma with T3-4stage (86.5%), lymph node metastasis group (90.0%)and clinical Ⅲ+Ⅳ stage (91.9%)were much higher than that with T1-2stage (66.7%),negative lymph node metastasis (68.5%) and Ⅰ+Ⅱs tage(68.4%), P values were0.021、0.026and0.016, respectively. There was no relationship with age and gender.3. The expression of MMP-9in esophageal squamous cell carcinomaThe expressions of MMP-9in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were located incytomembrane and cytoplasm of cells. The expressions of MMP-9in esophageal squamouscell carcinoma were higher than that of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma-adjacentnormal tissues[57.4%(54/94) vs10.6(5/47), P<0.05]. MMP-9expression in esophagealsquamous cell carcinoma with T3-4stage (69.2%), lymph node metastasis group (75.0%)and clinical Ⅲ+Ⅳ stage(78.3%) were much higher than that with T1-2stage (42.8%),negative lymph node metastasis (44.4%) and Ⅰ+Ⅱ stage(43.9%), P values were0.010,0.003and0.001, respectively. There was no relationship with age and gender.4. The relationship of FOXC1, MMP-2and MMP-9in esophageal squamous cellcarcinomaThe expression of FOXC1was positively correlated with that of MMP-2and MMP-9(r=0.401,0.506, both P<0.01). In addition, expression of MMP-2was positivelycorrelated with MMP-9(r=0.520, P <0.01).ConclusionThe over expression of FOXC1, MMP-2and MMP-9are correlated to thedevelopment and metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. It is likely that thenjointly participate in that process. Therefore the detection of FOXC1, MMP-2and MMP-9maybe regarded as a pathological reference index.
