Objective To investigate the effect of the neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy(NCR) on the anastomosis and defuctioning stomas following low anterior resection in patients with rectal cancer. Methods Between May2008and May2013,119patients with T1-4rectal cancer in Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital of Zhejiang University enrolled in the study. They were divided into two groups. Group A consists of66patients who were subjected to preoperative radiotherapy to pelvis, with a total does of44-46Gy in20days fractions of2Gy each in4weeks, all received5-FU-basedchemotherapy during the period of radiotherapy. Low anterior resection(LAR) was performed6to8weeks after completion of neoadjuvant therapy according to the role of TME technique. Group B consisted of53patients who without preoperative radiotherapy got surgery directly. All patients got defuctioning ileostomy. Results Anastomosis-related complication was16.7%in group A and6.7%in group B, without significant difference(P=0.064). Defuctioning ileostomy became permanent stoma was16.7%in group A and15.1%in group B, without significant difference(P=0.895).Conclusion Preoperation neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy has no impact on Anastomosis-related complication and defuctioning ileostomy became permanent stoma.
