Herpetospermum caudigerum grows widely in the southwest of China, Nepal and the northeast of India. The dried ripe seeds of H. Caudigerum is a well-known heat-clearing and detoxicating herb and is used to relieve "Chiba" diseases (one of the three main types of diseases in the Tibetan medicine, such as jaundice, hepatitis, intumescences and inflammation, which are caused by functional disorder of gallbladder and liver) by the Tibetan healers. The seeds of H. caudigerum was found to show positive activity in anti-hepatitis and anti-oxidation. Further biological screening of the ethyl acetate soluble fraction revealed significant inhibitory activity against hepatitis B virus. Chemical researches have shown that the ethyl acetate extract mainly includes lignans and Coumarins. Most of prescriptions which have H. Caudigerum were pills in traditional Tibetan medicine, it illustrates the oil of H. Caudigerum preserved in pills. But there is hardly any pharmacodynamics of oil. And, the material basis of H. Caudigerum is noe clear. To intense research for he material basis of H. Caudigerum, and create drugs that sre used to treat hepatitis B. The present study describes a holistic method based on chemical characteristic and protection against immunological liver injury of the oils and lignans of H. Caudigerum to analyze systematically the active constituents of H. Caudigerum. In pharmacodynamics, The immune liver injuries of mice were induced by BCG and LPS, the level of ALT, AST, MDA, SOD, NO were observed.. Spectrum-activity relationship research reveal the liver protection material basis of H. Caudigerum. The result of this research is to provide a model combining chemical fingerprints and pharmacodynamics for the study on TCM, and lay a foundation for clinical drug screening of anti-hepatitis.
