This paper collected and organized the relevant provisions of spleen-theoryin ten representative medical books from pre-Qin to the Tang Dynasty. It is aimedto promote related study on the concept and connotation of spleen-theory bydiscussing its formation, development, characteristics and regularity duringthis period.Purpose:Clarifying the related concepts,basic principles and laws ofspleen-theory from pre-Qin period to the Tang Dynasty,so as set furtherfoundation for the systematic research on concept,principle and law of thespleen.Material and method:Withthemethodofliteratureandtheoreticalresearch,based on present spleen-theory of physiology, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis,prevention and treatment, this paper analyzed and summarized relatedspleen-theory in the ten representative medical books during this period,including their characteristics and the relation between the related content.1. Establish the bibliography and version: According to “Catalogue of ChineseAncient Books of TCM”,“Ling Shu”,“Su Wen”,“Nan Jing”,“MaiJing”,“Shang Hanlun”,“Jinkui Yaolue”,“Zhubing Yuanhoulun”,“HuangdiNeiJing TaiSu”,“Beiji Qianjin Yaofang”,“Qianjin Yifang”are selected.2. Extracting information: Extract spleen-theory related information in theselected medical books, including anatomical morphology and physiological function, physiological characteristics, as well as its form,liquid and relationwith other viscera, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, treatmentprinciple and regularity of the formulas and keeping in good health, etc.3. Analysis and summarization: Comb the related theory of the spleen, and discussthe characteristics of the formation and development of the spleen as theory.Conclusion:1. Before the Qin and Han Dynasties, literature represented by “Neijing”preliminarily built the basic framework of the spleen–theory and establishedthe form, official opening, fluid, azimuth, etiology, pathogenesis and otherclosely related set of spleen, laid a foundation for posterity and developmentof spleen-theory in later generation.2. In Eastern Han, Zhang Zhongjing treated spleen and stomach disease by treatingviscera as a whole according to his six meridians and miscellaneous diseasesyndrome differentiation. Zhang’s emphasize on spleen and stomach perfectedspleen theory.3.“Nanjing” presented the prototype of "the spleen governs the blood" byproposing "spleen wrapping blood". In Sui and Tang Dynasties, doctors furtherenriched and developed the connotation of "the spleen wrapping blood" accordingto their clinical observation and practical accumulation. This set basis forthe formation of the theory of “the spleen governs the blood”.4. In the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the theory of the spleen was further enrichedand perfected, especially the differentiation of spleen and stomach disease,became more systematic. In terms of healthcare, the cold temperature adjustment,balanced diet, nourishment and diet therapy were advocated.
