Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are widely used for the treatment of depression, obsession, anxiety disorder, somatoform disorders, eating disorders, and have generally favorable side effect profiles and drug safety. However, a number of case reports and observational studies of bleeding problems including bruise, purpura, hematoma, epistaxis, menometrorrhagia, upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage, intracranial hemorrhage and postpartum hemorrhage have been described in the literature. This paper reports2cases admitted in the psychiatric department of the Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. This paper reviews the current literature on the subject and its pathophysiological mechanisms, noted the importance of risks of abnormal bleeding caused by SSRIs. We should put greater emphasis on the risk factors, which can benefit more in improving the safety of SSRIs.
