Today, with the rapid development of technology and rapid growth of aging population, more and more health service systems for the elderly came out( here in after referred to as “systems for the elderly”). Those systems bring convenience to the elderly, timely obtain information of the elderly, offer treatment or help timely when they have health problems, can mainly replace the caregivers’ duties. Those systems used in nursing homes can reduce the work load of caregivers; used for family can make the children of the elderly feel at ease to go out. Systems for the elderly is very useful for current society, have a great prospect of development.The human-computer interaction is a technology studying the influence between people and computers, a technology studying how to combine human with computer technology to make the computer technology to achieve the maximum humanization. The human-computer interaction technology is widely used in all kinds of systems for the elderly, the study of human-computer interaction technology can provide a good guidance for the design of systems for the elderly in practical, easy to use and their psychological aspects, makes the systems more attractive to the elderly.This subject comes from the SOLACE project of PHIT laboratory of Indiana University, a system for the elderly designed for low economic elderly population, to solve the growing care needs problems of the elderly. This article first introduces the human-computer interaction technology, sensor technology and Arduino technology are selected as the main interaction technologies of the system; secondly, analyzes and compares several communication technologies, selects the ZigBee technology and the Websocket technology as the main communication technologies for the system; also analyzes the physiological and psychological characteristics of the elderly, clear the design principle of the system, and provide guidance for the design of the system. Then analyze the needs of the system, clearly the system function, designs system structure. Finally, introduces the design principles, hardware and software implementation of the system, gives the design results.This system for the elderly has a strong practicability and usability, can help the elderly to interact with the system and caregivers, provides great convenience for the healthy life of the elderly.
