Objective To access and evaluate the prevalence of stroke, distribution of high-risk groups and risk factors among residents above 40 in Yongning, and to provide theoretical basis to precaution and intervention of stroke in this area. Methods Through cluster multistage and random sampling, a resident(≥5 years) group of 4221 people was investigated, who were aged above 40 in 3 small towns and 2 communities of Yongning country. Through a unified questionnaire, prevalence and risks factors of stroke in this area were described and analysed according to cross-sectional study. Results The prevalence of stroke was 5.03% of Yongning residents, there was no significant difference between two genders(P>0.05). Males exceed the females in the ratio of high-risk group(P<0.05). Prevalence of stroke and ratio of high-risk group increase as the age grows. Ratio was found low in Hui ethnic group in prevalence of stroke and high-risk group compared with what was found in Han ethnic group(P<0.05). By logistic regression, the risk factors of stroke include: age, ethnicity, carotid intima thickening or plaque, past transient ischemic attack(TIA), and hypertension, etc. Regular physical exercise is a considered protecting factor. Conclusion High prevalence of stroke was found in Yongning residents. Age, positivity in family history of stroke and past transient ischemic attack are the most noteworthy risk factors in this country. Hui people’s prevalence of stroke is lower than Han people, may be associated with their good dietetic and living habits. Appropriately increasing physical exercise has positive implication for reducing the incidence of stroke.
