Objective:To observe the efficacy and side effects of topical use of glyceryl trinitrate 0.2% ointment in reducing post-haemorrhoidectomy pain and improving wound healing. Methods:Fifty patients with haemorrhoids of second to fourth degree were randomized into two groups(n=25):the treatment group and control group. In treatment group, glyceryl trinitrate 0.2% ointment was applied three times a day after hemorrhoidectomy, other routine therapies of two groups are same. The visual analogue scales for anal pain, the time needed for wound healing, the incidence of edema in cut edge, the incidence of rectal bleeding and any other side effect was recorded. Results:Glyceryl trinitrate 0.2% ointment used post-haemorrhoidectomy has a statistically significant effect in reducing pain on Days 3-5 compared to the control group,It also significantly improved wound healing. However,it was not significant in reducing pain on Day 2 and Day 6.The incidence of rectal bleeding and edema in cut edge were not statistically significant.Headache is the most commonly encountered but other side effects include fatigue and skin irritation. Conclusion:This trial has shown that glyceryl trinitrate 0.2% ointment used post-haemorrhoidectomy has a significant analgesic effect in the intermediate time period. It also significantly improved wound healing. The incidence of rectal bleeding and edema in cut edge were not statistically significant.Side effects include headache, fatigue and skin irritation.
