Objectives:Muscle mass is reduced in elderly patients with CHF. FFMI is an important indicator for clinical evaluation of muscle mass. To investigate evaluation of muscle mass in elderly patients with CHF by FFMI using BIA, and analysis the association between FFMI and blood biomarkers, LVEF, LVEDD. Methods:A total number of 71 patients(mean age 71.77±0.89 years, 34 males), admitted to the First Hospital of Jilin University because of CHF and 33 controls(mean age 69.48±1.15 years, 14 males) were included from November 2015 to February 2016. Both groups are similar in age and gender(age 71.77±0.89 years vs.69.48±1.15 years, P=0.135. male 34(47.9%) vs.14(42%), P=0.603). All of the participants accepted the regular blood test, echocardiogram and BIA, all statistical studies were performed with Graph Pad Prism5 and SPSS 19.0 software. Results:FFMI of the CHF group are significantly lower than which are in the control group(16.29±2.13kg/㎡ vs. 18.39±2.03 kg/㎡, P<0.001). In the CHF group, the FFMI was highly correlated with SMM(r=0.851, P<0.001) and BMI(r=0.688, P<0.001). The FFMI was inversely correlated with age(r=-0.373, P=0.001). The FFMI was correlated with LVEF(r=0.252, P=0.034). The CHF group was divided into three groups which were low FFMI group, medium FFMI group and high FFMI group according to the FFMI. There were significant differences in BMI among the three groups(P<0.001). Significant differences were found in age(P=0.009) and NT-pro BNP(P=0.031). The CHF group was divided into three groups according to BMI which were thin and normal(BMI < 24.0 kg/m2), overweight(24.0 kg/ m2≤BMI<28.0 kg/m2), obesity(BMI≥28kg/m2), significant differences were found only in cholesterin and triglyceride. Conclusion: 1. Muscle mass of elderly patients with CHF was significantly lower than the control group. 2. The loss of muscle mass got much lower as the CHF patients aged. 3. FFMI has certain relevance with clinical indicator of CHF, it could be another indicator to evaluate CHF.
