objectiveTo explore the metrological characteristics, clustering analysis and key words, principles of acupoint selectionsand the safety and curative effect of acupuncture treatment of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease in Chinese literature on using acupuncture for treating chronic pelvic inflammatory disease (CPID).MethodsThrough online search via Chinese journal full-text databases (CNKI), Chinese periodical databases (VIP), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service platform(WanFangDate) and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), a database was established by collecting the literature on using acupuncture for treating chronic pelvic inflammatory disease on a selective basis. Statistical analyses on the basis of the database were subsequently conducted via software such as excel, SPSS22.0, IBM SPSS Modeler14.1, and Review Manager 5.2.ResultsA total of 331 research articles published during the recent two decades with an average annual publication rate of 16.6, were investigated. Most of the research articles came from the year of 2015. The number of new articles increased rapidly, with 46 articles published between 1995 and 2002,140 articles between 2003 and 2010, and 45 between 2011 and 2015. The articles were contributed by authors from 30 provinces, the top five being Guangdong, Henan, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Hebei. The articles involve a total of 272 first author’s affiliations, most of which are hospitals, with the top frequently-occurring affiliation being guangdong hospital. The 331 articles were published in 133 journals; the four with the most articles are "Shanghai journal of acupuncture", "acupuncture clinical magazine", "Chinese acupuncture ", "journal of traditional Chinese medicine in Inner Mongolia" A total of 18 kinds of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment are used than 5 times, which are respectively acupuncture plus physical therapy, acupuncture, acupoint injection, acupuncture, and acupuncture plus Chinese medicine.Seventy five acupoints are mentioned in the 331 articles, with a total usage frequency of 1468 times. Seventy acupoints are high frequently used with a total usage frequency of 1264 times; these acupoints are guan yuan, san yin jiao, su san li, gas extremely, uterus, in the sea, return, time liao, shen shu, waterways, Yin ling spring, blood, lr 3, CV 8, mai, chung wan, ba liao Thirteen meridians are mentioned in the 331 articles, with Ren meridian, the meridian of spleen, and the meridian of stomach accounting for 67.7% of the total meridian selections. The acupoints used for treatment in the literature are mainly in the areas of chest and limbs, which were mentioned for 831 and 390 times, respectively, followed by back and waist which was mentioned for 115 times. Of all the acupoints used in the investigated research studies, 45 were specific and used for a total time of 888, accounting for 60.49 percent of the total use of acupoints. Acupoints compatibility with distance with acupuncture point is given priority to, binary prescription of accounted for 42.9%, far and near with the ternary prescription of accounted for 50%, far and near with the and multi-purpose the acupoints ren meridian, spleen and stomach.A total of 369 keywords were used in the 331 articles. Twenty five high frequency keywords were used for cluster analysis, which shows that the keywords "pelvic inflammation", "chronic conditions", "chronic pelvic inflammatory disease", "acupuncture" and "abdominal needle, needle warm", needle", "thermal moxibustion", "cupping", "Chinese medicine enem", "Chinese medicine", "treatment", "ultrashort wave", "TDP", "acupuncture points", "adnexitis", "cold dampness grinds", "care" tend to co-occur; keywords such as "Chinese medicine therapy" usually occur together;keywords "Acupuncture point injection", "heartleaf houttuynia herb injection" and "pelvic bag piece", "irregular menstruation " acute pelvic inflammatory disease" tend to cluster together.Twenty eight articles were used for meta-analysis. In terms of cure rate, four studies [18,64,74,64] compared acupuncture and Chinese medicine; the heterogeneity among the research studies is not obvious (P> 0.1, I squared = 5%); analysis with a fixed effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of cure rate [RR= 0.35,95% CI (0.23,0.23), P< 0.01). Six studies [65,67,75,80,81,85] compared the use of acupuncture in combinations with Chinese medicine with the simple use of traditional Chinese medicine; the heterogeneity among the research studies is not obvious (P>0.1, I squared= 14%), analysis with a fixed effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of cure rate [RR= 0.65,95% CI (0.54,0.54), P< 0.01). Five studies [69, 71,36,84,71] compared acupuncture with traditional Chinese medicine; the heterogeneity among the research studies is not obvious (P< 0.1, I squared = 65%), analysis with a random effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of cure rate [RR= 0.52,95% CI (0.42,0.42), P< 0.01). Five studies [68,79,82,83,82] compared acupuncture and moxibustion in combination with Chinese medicine with western medicine; the heterogeneity among the research studies is not obvious (P= 0.1, I squared= 49%), analysis with a fixed effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of cure rate [RR= 0.60,95% CI (0.46,0.46), P< 0.01). Six studies [70,72,73,76, 78,89] compared acupuncture and moxibustion with western medicine; the heterogeneity among the research studies is not obvious (P> 0.1, I squared = 31%), analysis with a fixed effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of cure rate [RR= 0.45,95% CI (0.35,0.35), P< 0.01).In terms of effective rate, four studies [18,64,74,64] compared the use of acupuncture with traditional Chinese medicine, the heterogeneity among the research studies is obvious (P< 0.1, I squared= 60%), analysis with a random effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of total effective rate [RR= 0.81,95% CI (0.73, 0.73), P< 0.01). Six studies [65,67,75,80,81,85] compared the use of acupuncture in combination with Chinese medicine with the simple use of Chinese medicine, the heterogeneity among the research studies is obvious s (P> 0.1, I squared= 0%), analysis with a fixed effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of total effective rate [RR= 0.88,95% CI (0.83,0.83), P< 0.01).Five [69,71,36,84,71] compared the use of acupuncture and moxibustion with the simple use of traditional Chinese medicine; the heterogeneity among the research studies is not obvious (P>0.1, I squared= 0%), analysis with a fixed effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of total effective rate [RR= 0.78,95% CI (0.71, 0.71), P< 0.01). Six studies [68,79,82,83, and 82,87] compared the use of acupuncture and moxibustion in combination with Chinese medicine with the simple use of traditional Chinese medicine; the heterogeneity among the research studies is not obvious (P> 0.1, I squared= 0%), analysis with a fixed effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of total effective rate [RR= 0.83,95% CI (0.78, 0.78), P< 0.01). Six studies [70,72,73,76,78,89] compared the use of acupuncture and moxibustion and the simple of western medicine; the heterogeneity among the research studies is obvious (P<0.1, I squared= 65%), analysis with a random effects model revealed a statistical significance between the two treatment methods in terms of total effective rate [RR= 0.78, 95% CI (0.72,0.72), P< 0.01).ConclusionBoth the number and quality of the modern clinical literature on acupuncture treatment of chronic prostatitis was on the rise, north China as the primarily post area. Most of the author’s affiliations documented in the investigated literature were hospitals and universities. Shanghai acupuncture, acupuncture clinical magazine, "Chinese acupuncture", and traditional Chinese medicine in Inner Mongolia are the leading journals for publication on the relevant literature, whereas there seems to be a lack of financial support for research in the area. At the same time, At the same time, about CPID acupuncture acupuncture plus physical therapy as the main types of CPID acupuncture; The treatment of CPID resolves around the use acupoints including Ren meridian, the meridian of yangming foot lunar spleen, foot, and foot bladder after acupuncture point with a focus on enriching spleen and kidney. Attention is also given to the use of specific acupoints such as jiao hui, and mu. The acupoint compatibility was mostly distal-proximal point association. Based on comparisons between the use of acupuncture and the use of Chinese medicine and comparisons between the use of acupuncture in combination with Chinese medicine and the use of western medicine, using acupuncture for treating CPID is found to be statistically superior to western medicine and to traditional Chinese medicine in terms of both curative effect and total effective rate.
