Su Tong’s Novel Research Under Modernism

With rich forms, Western Modernism was widely used in Chinesecontemporary literary world. As a Contemporary Author, except his ownunique life experience, Su Tong’s works are branded with Modernism. Soone of the way to understand Su Tong is to seek the Modernism technique inhis works, in the meanwhile, this is the goal of my thesis. I try to discussthe Modern socialist characteristics in two ways, that is, the author’sattention to Modernity and his text’s presentation of Modernity. WesternModernism meets with traditional Chinese literature, which make SuTong’s novels full of Poetic graceThat is inevitable of the Modernism in Su Tong’s novels, because ofhis experience of growing up. In other word, that Su Tong’s lives ofchildhood and boyhood make a psychological basis for his fiction creation.Under the influence of Literature trend, Su Tong chose to exaggerate thedestruction of life. Su Tong’s works are filled with Survival anxiety、Desperation、 Nothingness、 Absurd、 Death and Destruction, which are thebasic themes of Modernism.In my opinion, Su Tong’s life melt into hisnovels completely, that is to say, his life is the note of his novels.The Modernism’s embody in the Su Tong’s novels, which includingfive parts——Flee and Death、Absurd theme、Ugliness、Modernism imageand Modernity narrative strategy.In Modern times, Su Tong is a success as a writer. But there are the values and the limitations of modernism at the same time in Su Tong’snovels.From the aesthetic aspect, Su Tong’s Modernity is full of Su Tong’spersonal characteristics. In one hand, No-emotional-writing displays hiscold cruelty; In other hand, beautiful language desalts this cold cruelty.While from reality aspect, Su Tong’s Modernity writing is keeping awatchful eye on society、 humanity and people’s living condition, thus hisfeelings of humanity shows between the lines. However, Su Tong’sModernity writing also have limitations, main showing in Simplification ofaesthetic appreciation.
