The imaginary motif of “the Woman in the Doorway” is a common combination ofimages in ancient Chinese tomb decoration. It first appeared in the ancient Chinesepaintings and tomb carving of the Han Dynasty but vanished from the sight until itprevailed once more over the Song, Jin, and Liao periods. It had two base elements: thehalf-open door and the person who open the door, and this two elements had neverchanged in the different times. So there definitely have a culture reasons of its back. Thispaper takes the tomb of Li maozhen couple, the Feng hui’s tomb and the Baisha tomb ofSong Dynasty as examples, combine the original imitation wood frame construction oftombs and the imaginary motif of “the Woman in the Doorway” so that we canunderstand the various meanings of the imaginary motif of “the Woman in the Doorway”which in the different tombs.Chapter1is the introduction. The chapter not only looks back the previous researchand learns from them a reasonable discussion with some possible flaws and shortcomings,but also puts forward the importance of this research and ideas of this thesis.Chapter2is the introduction of the imaginary motif of “the Woman in the Doorway”.At first, take a brief look at of the imaginary motif of “the Woman in the Doorway”.Second, pointing out the importance of putting the motifs into their original tomb contextwith imitation wood frame construction. Third, illustrating the relationship between theimaginary motif of “the Woman in the Doorway” and imitation wood frame constructionwhich in tombs.Chapter3takes the tomb of Li maozhen couple, the Feng hui’s tomb and the Baishatomb of Song Dynasty as examples to analyse the social background of the imaginarymotif of “the Woman in the Doorway” in those tombs to summing up the changes of thefemale’s social status between the five Dynsdties and Song Dynasty.
