Mo Yan is a very famous writer who built a Literary Utopia named theNorthwest Town in Gaomi. In this Utopia, he reviewed the history in a special way,sought out his ancestors’ sprits of heroic and freedom, criticized the darkness andinjustice, searched for the future of humanity. The carnival narration in his novelsmade the novels less solemnity and heavy, which let readers feel that his novels arejust kind of abreacting and lack of connotation. Actually, his novels are full of tragicelements, and he was writing the tragedy in his own style.There are three main parts in this paper. In the first part, it tries to find out thereasons of the novels’ tragic elements by studying his history and his Chinesetraditional intellectual’s sprits. In the second part, it gives an explanation to threetypical tragedies of Mo Yan’s novels: life tragedy, history tragedy, humanity tragedy.the third part is the most important part of this paper. It talks about the special featuresof Mo Yan’s tragedy. It fund that Mo Yan’s novels tragic was digested by his talentednarration, the use of color and symbolism and the practical rationality of the Chinesetraditional sprit.
