| This study is designed to investigate the engagement values on theirdistributional features and their functions in interpersonal relationship in Englisheconomic news. Based on Martin and White’s Appraisal Theory, this qualitativestudy chooses50samples from the news website: Wall Street Journal, and exploresthe distributional patterns of engagement values in the samples as well as how theycontribute to the realization of the writer/reader relationship.The results indicate that by strategically adopting different categories ofengagement values, writers of English economic news negotiate with various voiceswithin the contexts, thus creating a desirable writer/reader relationship.This study provides a possible way to analyze the writer/reader relationship indiscourse. Also, it is hoped to broaden the application of Appraisal Theory inpractical research. Additionally, a new perspective is brought up to further studies onEnglish economic news. |
