This is a survey report on information processing skills training in consecutiveinterpreting note-taking with the MTI (interpreting) students of GuangdongUniversity of Foreign Studies as its survey subjects. Here, information processing is aterminology in cognitive psychology and note-taking is employed as an approach tostudying the information processing mechanism involved in consecutive interpreting.Note-taking is an important tool for interpreters. Generally, its major function isto aid their short-term memory. And since interpreters are required to complete theirjob instantaneously, note-taking should be done in an effective way so as not tointerfere with other mental activities or delay the output. Therefore, interpreters oftenchoose to process the information they hear and note down a skeleton discernible tothem. In cognitive psychology, information processing refers to the process ofreceiving, preserving, disposing and transmitting information and human brain can beconsidered as an information processing system. It mainly consists of receptors, sensory register, pattern recognition, working memory and long-term memory. In thecase of interpreting, notes are usually a visual representation of interpreters’information processing outcome and thus become an effective medium of studyinginterpreters’ mechanism of information processing and its correlation with the qualityof ultimate interpreting output. The subjects of this survey include16MTI students of GDUFS. Their notestaken during a particular interpreting task—Chinese-English translation of diplomaticspeech—were collected and their outputs were recorded. Afterwards, they filled up aquestionnaire, which was about their education background, awareness of informationprocessing and their performance in the test. Subjects showing interesting featureswere also interviewed personally. The data collected through the questionnaire andpersonal interviews serves as supplementary materials to the analysis of notes andrecordings. Through the analysis, the author summarized four common problemsregarding information processing among interpreting trainees, associated them with different stages of human information processing mechanism and provided hersuggestions for the improvement of interpreting pedagogy.
