Grammatical metaphor is an important concept insystemic-functional grammar and has received various research attentions. As it has been problematically defined by Halliday and his followers, thetheoretical and empirical studies on it are not, to some extent, adequateand consummate. Besides, in the field of translation studies, theapplication of grammatical metaphor is not satisfactory with itstheoretical inadequacy and unsystematicity of data collection. This thesisattempts to provide a systematical study of restructuring grammaticalmetaphor in literary translations, with a case study of Sense andSensibility, from the perspective of functional stylistics. Based on theinadequate investigation of grammatical metaphor in previous studies, concerning its classification, functions and stylistic values, a refined andmore comprehensive classification of grammatical metaphor is providedand applied to the present stylistic analysis. Moreover, given the previousinsufficient accounts of the function of grammatical metaphor, it intendsto be both intra-textually and inter-textually explored, and cognitivelyexpounded in terms of categorization and de-categorization. Furthermore, the theoretical discussion of grammatical metaphor on congruence andincongruence is incorporated with the notion of equivalence in traditionaltranslation studies, for the purpose of benefiting the following stylistic analysis of Sense and Sensibility. In the section of case study, thecurrently developed theoretical framework of grammatical metaphor willbe implemented accordingly, based on which ideational metaphor, interpersonal metaphor and textual metaphor are evaluated respectively inelaboration with their differentiated metaphorical processes, related totranslation.
