Previous researches have been conducted about the Nobel Prize Winner—DorisLessing’s novel The Summer before the Dark from perspectives of symbolism, feminism and psycho-analysis. However, few researches have attempted to drawconnections between space and the female protagonist’s final return to her family. Thisthesis, in the light of Spatial Criticism, tends to explore the social, psychological andpolitical significances embedded in the space on the basis of the protagonist’sexperiences. The thesis also attempts to analyze the repressed female image in socialspace, the symbolic journey in psychological space as well as the object andimplement of discipline in body space. By doing so, the thesis concludes that in thepatriarchal society the omnipresent power manipulates and regulates social citizens bymeans of space to maintain the male authority. |
