William Gibson is one of the most influential contemporary science fictionwriters.Being the most important post-modern novelist, he also draws lots of attentionfrom many mainstream critics. William Gibson’s novels portray the life of virtualworld in the near future, which show his deep thought and concern about the scienceand technology, human being as well as the social development.This thesis consists of three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. Theintroduction briefly introduces the author’s literary achievements, research status ofcyberpunk novels at home and abroad, the reason and necessity of this thesis.Chapter1is the science fiction in William Gibson’s novels. The author’s analysisstarts with the fancy world and fancy character in Gibson’s novels. First, using theworld of digital network, the world of artificial intelligence and genetic engineeringtechnology as well as the world of political economy as the narrative background, theauthor makes a comprehensive analysis of fantasy elements and characters. Then, theauthor chooses and analyses the unique characters in William Gibson’s works,namely, hackers and network cowboy, cyber cell and female. The second chapterdiscusses the humanity reflection in William Gibson’s novels. Applying thesimulacres theory of Jean Baudrillard, author analyses influence of computertechnology to the construction of human spirit, which draws author’s reflection onhumanity and society. The third chapter is from the literary aesthetics view exploresthe idealogical characteristics and artistic charm of cyberpunk novel.
