The quickly popular discipline of metaphor has primarily found itspractical models in cognitive linguistics, especially in conceptualmetaphor theory. Metaphor is the fundamental core of human thought andactivity; it can be seen as the general phenomenon of analogicalinterpretation in interpreting and organizing human experience, whichenables people to understand the incomprehensible by substituting a“common sense” fact (Cresswell,1997). Metaphoric studies can be tracedback to Aristotle and going on till today, it has been a central topic inCognitive Linguistics since the field was born and the term coined in the1970s, which emerged a new strong wave of metaphor studies.20years later, Charteris-Black (2004) developed the CriticalMetaphor Approach, which incorporating Critical Discourse Analysis,Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Corpus Linguistics, named CriticalMetaphor Analysis, Charteris-Black (2004) pointed out that peopleviewing and perceiving the world through the metaphor, so CriticalMetaphor Analysis serves as an important research tool for the cognitivemetaphors.Metaphor is a critical component in economics research.Economists applied the metaphor to handle the transition from oneabstract setting to the other concrete setting. This study endeavors to thediscourse-analytical approach to analyzing metaphors by taking into account the cognitive and ideology pervades in the context: theInternational Monetary Fund (hereafter IMF) Annual Report period from2002to2013. By means of AntConc3.2.4software tool and manual work,supported by both quantitative and qualitative methods. Through analysisa large number of metaphors are identified in the IMF Annual Report,they can be categorized into six dominant parts as: MECHANICAL,LIVING ORGANISM, BUILDING, LIQUID, WAR, and NATURALFORCE.Through analysis the frequency and productivity in actualeconomic discourse, it will allow better understanding of economicsituated and provide a basis tool for both linguists and economists toanalyzing the cognitive styles and economic phenomenon.
