The French composer Andre Jolivet has strong favor in the culture which is ancient, magical and with original flavor. He thinks that the vocalization of flute is the most natural, because each note from the flute is alive, they exist truly in human’s body and the universe. Ander prefers flute to any other instruments. He thinks that the flute could explain his music very well, so flute is widely used in his work, and turns into representative. This article tries to analyze Jolivet’s main creating characteristic based on his work’Chant de linos’.’Chant de lions’was the appointed music as the entrance exam for National Music Institute in Paris. It’s inspiration originated from a type of lamentation and elegy which includes crying and dances in the ancient Greek funeral ceremony.This paper consists of introduction, main body (include three chapters) and conclusion. It is also attached by reference and postscript in the end. Introduction states the aim and significance of this study and current research status. By analyzing the source of composition and style at different stages, Chapter One reveals the main composing style of Andre Jolivet. By analyzing the detailed musical structures and performance skills, Chapter Two highlights the important position of’Chant de linos’ in all of his flute works. Chapter Three analyses the other two flute works and finds out his main composing characteristics. Finally, conclusion is the summarization and induction of this paper.
