As an important aspect of piano playing, the expression of multiple voices significantly influences the quality of performance. F. Chopin, known as the poet of the piano in the Romantic Era with the important position in history of piano art, greatly developed the expression of piano music in terms of harmony, texture, rhythm, mode, sound, ideological content and temperament. Meanwhile, the complex and profound cogitation in his works reflects largely on the vertical and horizontal lines of voices. Though as part of homophonic music, these lines of voices also embody Chopin’s thought of polyphony. Emphasis and deep research on the complex phenomenon of multiple voices in Chopin’s music will be beneficial to showing the sense of multiple dimensions in performance and enriching the sound effects of performance. It is surely significant to expound the compositional intention of Chopin’s works. This paper can be divided into four parts:The first part is introduction to the pattern of texture in Chopin’s music. The second part discusses the multiple voices in piano playing in terms of "touch and volume" and "touch and timbre".The third part is analysis and performance of multiple voices in Chopin’s piano works, which specifically analyzes the combination of multiple voices in Chopin’s works. The fourth part is seeking the implicit voices in music with further discussion of the features of the implicit voices, which is the complement and extension of analysis and performance of multiple voices in Chopin’s piano works. The innovation of this paper is the deep research on the phenomenon of multiple voices with examples on the basis of analyzing the combination and relationships of multiple voices in Chopin’s piano works, providing reference for understanding the artistic features of Chopin’s piano works and improving skills of performance.
