The Application Of Proverb In Subtitle Translation Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory-A Case Study On Gossip Girl

As a carrier of social culture, TV series play a more and more significant role in the field of cultural communication. In recent years, China has imported a large number of TV series from foreign countries to meet the increasing need of foreign TV series for domestic people. Besides, subtitle translation plays a crucial role in helping people understand the plot and character’s personalities in TV series. Subtitles refers to the show of the dialogues, the images and contents in a television, film, stage works in written form, and also refers to the late processing of text in film and television works.This thesis analyzes the application of proverb in subtitle translation in American TV series Gossip Girl based on Skopos theory. It tries to explore and draw a conclusion of the practical strategies for subtitle translation.Skopos theory is an important guiding principle in translation. Skopos theory holds that translation should follow three rules:Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. All the translation activities follow the first rule "Skopos rule", namely the translation should function in cultural situation in the target language according to the target language receivers’expectation. The guidance of Skopos theory is more in line with the characteristics of subtitle translation.The first part of the thesis mainly introduces the significance, methods and the structure of the thesis. Different from other forms of literature texts, subtitle translation has its own uniqueness. Systematic analysis and case analysis are mainly adopted in this thesis. The second part, first of all, introduces the current research on subtitle translation at home and abroad. Second, the definition and classification of subtitle and the characteristics and constrains of subtitle translation are explained. Then, the definition, characteristics and translation of proverb are briefly introduced.The third part systematically elaborates the developments of Skopos theory and the three rules of the theory are analyzed, which shows the possibility of applying it to subtitle translation.In the fourth part the examples which contain the application of proverb in Gossip Girl are analyzed under the guidance of Skopos theory, and different translation strategies are explained further.In the last part, the findings and implications of subtitle translation are given, and the author draws a conclusion of subtitle translation for subtitle translation.
