The Role Of Emotin Between Music And Colour Association

The relationship between music and color is an interesting and extensive phenomenon, this study will research their association rules and emotional association mechanism by using of more extensive representation music and color stimulus materials. This study will use the Chinese abbreviated version PAD mood scales to explore the music emotion and color emotion and the role of emotion in their association, which include valence, arousal and dominance three dimensions of emotion. At the same time, this study also discuss aesthetic preference’s role in the music-color association and the relation between preference and emotion. The results show that:(1) hue, saturation, brightness has significantly impact on color emotion, the brightness’s effect is significant on both chromatic and achromatic colors.(2) The music composers, mode and tempo have significantly impact on music emotion. The tempo’s effect is significant through all emotion dimensions.(3) music-color association can be established through their dimensions as above. Fast music is related to more red and yellow hue, saturated, bright colour, slow music is related to more blue and green hue, unsaturated, and less bright color. Major is related to more bright colour, while minor music is related to less bright color.(4) Emotion plays an intermediary role in the association, the relationships between music and color emotions are significant positive in each dimension.(5) Aesthetic preference is significantly positive related with the three dimensions of emotion. There is e significant positive correlation between the aesthetic preference of the associated color and music.
