This thesis is aiming at how drama genres and context in musicals restrict and constrain musical composing. It mainly includes examples from:three arias that featured musical songs character in my live-theater musical Half Dozen of love, Half Dozen of Lies, and the re-creation work from an American musical Once On This Island. Thus, it may provide theoretical evidence and support for the musical composing based on these examples, also may propose some methods to start with musical composing under various drama genres and context. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter expounds the definition of drama genres and context, which emphasis the significance of expression methods and features of drama genres, as well as drama context in musicals. Then the second chapter narrates how drama genres and context in musicals constrains musical composing. In this chapter, according to composing theory, the author analyses examples of classical European and American musicals to clarify how musical composing is restricted under drama genres and context. The third chapter takes arias in my live-theater musical Half Dozen of love, Half Dozen of Lies as examples, to interpret my composing from two perspectives:the drama functions of three arias in this musical, the unity and contrast of each aria. Finally, based on the principal of "the restrictions and conditionality of drama genres and context at musical composing".The fourth chapter discusses about how to do the re-creation work according to existing materials when the musical music resource is very limited, with the example of the rehearsal experience in an American musical Once On This Island.
